better then the real thing?

on my ongoing quest to back my life up, i have started a mirror of my blog using the wordpress online blog service. you can visit the villainous.biz mirror here.

i almost feel that the mirror is a better webpage then the original for various reasons. first of all, the wordpress hosted service is free, although laugingsquid has been fantastic so far in terms of value, uptime and support. the built-in theme on the mirror is much more clean and intuitive to use then the custom gridview theme i am using for my primary site. too much control makes me want to customize villainous.biz and i end up cramming as much info into it as i can, which i am beginning to think is a mistake as access to content should be paramount.

in any case i will keep both weblogs, maybe because of sheer vanity. if you have a preference let me know 🙂

too many fires close to home

in the span of just a few days, 2 places that are close to me will never be the same.

after coming back from a friends’ birthday, karin, adam and i found ourselves standing outside camden station, just beyond the camden lock, watching blooms of smoke hit the sky. we had to make a lengthy detour to get home. looking at my phone when i reached my bed, i realized that i missed an sms from the neighbors. all it said was “camden is on fire!“.

Namdaemun gate in Seoul, South Corea is the oldest piece of history in the country. i have been working on a project with the city involving the ancient city walls, and the south gate once marked the entrance to the old city. recently opened to the public again, its burning marks a major blow to the historical commodity of the culture and nation. this also forces us who are working on the project to rethink the relevance of our proposals after such a tragic event.

no matter how far we have progressed, no matter how far technologically has advanced, no matter how morally enlightened we may become, fire always wins.

my dad in china

my dad recently made a journey to the motherland (china) with some survivors of the Nanjing Massacre. here is an excerpt from his most recent blog entry:

Her story was one of horror and sexual terror; she has become sterile and barren, and has a fear of men. Unable to bear any children herself, she adopted two boys, one of whom (man on her right) is now looking after her in her old age. Surprisingly, she displayed no hatred for her oppressors; like all the other victims, all she asked for was an apology from the Japanese government.
Everybody in the audience was moved by her story. At one point, Flora, who was translating her story for the teachers, broke down in tears. By the end of her story, there was almost not a single dry eye in the room.

before bedtime i often find myself infront of NetNewsWire for a min or 120, reading the latest headlines being fed to me by RSS. curiously enough, i noticed a secret message dispatched to me from [SmarcH] using his feed from his ‘old’ villainy.biz weblog. the contents were as follows:

Help me smallcaps you’re my only hope, tear this excuse for a blog down, build something new. or should we just keep villainy.biz as a test bed for all projects? I feel a warm embarrassment for the content that occupies this space. also i think that you are the only one that will actually read this post. hope all is well in berlin, keep rockin’ the metaverse, now that you are in your “teens”

feeling the call for help by my brother from another mother, and since i already pwn3d! all access to his entire web server, including administrator level logins & passwords for webhosting admin, ftp, and phpmyadmin (what?! no email?). there was no need to log into his old wordpress weblog, i just dropped the entire database and created a new one 😉 . deployed in its place is a shiny new installation of the latest wordpress build for him to use with some minor tweaks (its got theme-switcher dawg!)* and once he finds internet in South Africa (he is there now to take care of family matters, but will be back in berlin soon. did you know that the BCC conference hall used for 22c3 in berlin had more bandwidth then all of Africa… the continent, not the Bambaataa.) lets hope it serves him well.

ok, well from the sounds of the poor encoding of the voip hacking lecture recorded from 22c3 streaming choppily to my airport express, it seems to appear that the itunes pod-cast listing actually works and you guys can subscribe using an rss feed listed directly in the program to auto-download any media files that appear on my web-log. of course the quality of content in those recordings are another question…

if you haven’t already seen them, check out [SmarcH] ‘s flickr stream.  he has been making some supa-sweet joiners.  mad props man.  now if only b1n4y would get his pix online, we could start some type of post-hockney revival sh!t, but with new enthusiasm and laptops.  its been a twenty-five or so year cycle, right?  keep up the good work!

hi all.  22C3 is coming up starting after xmas and the geeks of the world tremble with anticipation.  as a special treat for Masterpiece Cleaners, emile, danja and i will be in attendance, fronting like we’re a crew of +-=:::::: 1 3 3 7 h 4 x 0 r 5 ::::::=-+ what better way to spend our xmas then with fat, stinky, bearded programers… whom we regard as gods and goddesses, i might add.  surely we wont be there for the chicks, but to learn and be learned.

because of this most special of special conferences, i have agreed to bestow my partner in grime, emile with the supreme position of “DA DADA DA! contributing writer!  we will see if he lives up to this gloriously honorable position.  does he even know his login/password for villainous.biz?  only time will tell.  and without a doubt, danja will take the position of resident supa-tech-artist-electrician-MPC-h4x0r-1337 guru and pretty good with a camera and photoshop too.  hey, we are kinda like the three stooges!  duh, does that make me the stupid one… awe..

danja will also bring his notebook with a hardened version of auditing gnu/linux to test his skills, but mostly to see how it will get smashed and 0wn3d, and grow from the experience.  i’m not even thinking about bringing my notebook.  probably a camera… can that be hacked?  well maybe a pencil and paper notebook, unless that can be hacked too.. if you are thinking of coming to 22C3 with a notebook i would advise reading this wiki regarding survival at the conference.  after you read this you will see why i am not even considering bring my computer, so posts will be delayed by a day, yet we will endeavor to bring you info regarding the events and pix of the backs of people sitting with there heads bowed down in front of computer screens, praying to whatever computer coding language god they pray to.
